About the Insects
High above the forest floor, the morpho butterfly spends most of its life drifting through the sunlit canopy of the rain forest, rarely venturing to the ground below. The adult male is famous for his dazzling, iridescent blue wings, while the female's colors are more subdued. As the butterfly glides through the trees with slow, graceful wing beats, brilliant flashes of blue appear and vanish in an instant. Each time its wings close, only the brown undersides remain visible, blending seamlessly into the surrounding leaves and branches. This mesmerizing flicker of blue followed by near invisibility confuses predators, making it difficult for them to track the butterfly's flight through the dense jungle.
